Prioritize inspection and detection.

Look for leaks and other interior signs of damage as soon as the weather allows. If you notice water stains, peeling paint, or mold and mildew on ceilings or walls, there’s likely roof damage. Keep in mind that water can travel sideways along walls. So water damage may be more extensive than it initially seems to be.


Eliminate gutter clutter.

Winter weather often results in an amassment of loose debris, leaving gutters clogged with leaves, sticks, and sediment. When spring showers arrive, this buildup can lead to overflow and flooding, damaging the shingles, fascia, and even the foundation if the gutters become chock-full and separate from the structure. Do not just focus on unclogging the gutters come springtime. As you work, keep an eye out for rust, cracks, and any loose or damaged joints and downspouts.


Clean the roof’s surface.

Prevent damage and deterioration by removing standing debris on the rooftop. Pressure washing with a special cleaning solution will help prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Look for standing water, gaps in flashing and expansion joints, or between chimneys, skylights, vents, or anything installed on or otherwise attached to the roof.


Prune nearby landscaping.

Leaves and limbs from trees and shrubs can clog gutters and scratch shingles, gutters, siding, and other exterior features. Large overhanging limbs can also pose a threat if they break off during a windstorm. Regularly trim them back to eliminate the risk of a DIY skylight.
